Food & Nutrition · Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh

Lakshmi Amma, 58 · 2025

“My grandchildren eat greens every day now. Before, we had rice and chilli. That was all.”

— Lakshmi Amma

Anantapur is one of the driest districts in India. After two consecutive failed monsoons, Lakshmi Amma's household was eating rice with chilli powder — twice a day, every day.

Through our nutrition programme she received a kitchen-garden kit: seeds for eleven vegetables, a 200-litre drip drum, and training in composting and grey-water reuse.

Her garden produced more than her family could eat. She began sharing, then selling, then teaching. Ten neighbours have started gardens with her help. Her granddaughter's growth chart has moved from 'severely underweight' to 'normal'.
